      Question

The question given below consists of two statements

numbered I and II given below it. You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Read all the statements and answer the question. Ten persons P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X and Y sit in two linear parallel rows - Row 1 and Row 2. Row 1 is to the north of Row 2. The persons in Row 1 face towards south direction and the persons in Row 2 face towards north direction. The persons in both the rows face each other. The distance between two adjacent persons is same in each row. The one, who faces T, sits in which row? Statement I: T sits third to the right of the one, who faces S. Only one person sits between S and U. S doesn't sit at the extreme end. Statement II: V sits third to the left of R in row 1. Only one person sits between the one, who faces V and W. T faces Q. Only two persons sit between T and P.
A Data given in statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question while the data given in statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B Data given in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question while the data given in statement I alone is not sufficient to answer the question. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C Data given either in statement I alone or in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D Data given in statement I and II together is necessary to answer the question. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
E Data given in statement I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

      Solution

From statement I alone, 'T sits third to the right of the one, who faces S. Only one person sits between S and U. S doesn't sit at the extreme end. The one, who sits immediate left of U faces T. We get: Case 1: When T sits in row 1. Case 2: When T sits in row 2. So, from statement I alone, we cannot answer the above question. So, data given in statement I alone is not sufficient to answer the question. ┬а From statement II alone, V sits third to the left of R in row 1. Only one person sits between the one, who faces V and W. T faces Q. Only two persons sit between T and P. We get: Case 1: When R sits at the extreme end. Case 2: When R sits second from the extreme end. Case 2.a: When T sits in row 1 Case 2.b: When T sits in row 2. So, from statement II alone, we cannot answer the above question. So, data given in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question. From statements I and II together, we get: So, from statements I and II together, we get, the one who faces T sits in row II. Therefore, data given in statement I and II together is necessary to answer the question.
