Let the distance by train be d km.
Then, distance by bus = 280 - d km
Time equation: d / 70 + (280 - d) / 35 = 5.8
LCM of 70 and 35 = 70
So, d/70 + 2(280 - d)/70 = 5.8
Or, (d + 560 - 2d) / 70 = 5.8
Or, (560 - d)/70 = 5.8
Multiply both sides:
560 - d = 406
d = 154
Distance by train = 154 km
