Question
The ratio of males to females on a bus is 7:6. At the
next stop, 7 males and 8 females exit the bus, while 4 males and 24 females board it. As a result, the ratio of males to females on the bus becomes 3:4. Determine the initial number of males on the bus.Solution
Let the initial number of males and females in the bus be 7x and 6x respectively
According to the question,
(7x – 7 + 4)/(6x – 8 + 24) = 3/4
Or, 28x – 12 = 18x + 48
Or, 10x = 60
Or, x = 6
Therefore, initial number of males in the bus = 7x = 42
