Question
In a 1500-metre race, Arjun beats
Bishnu by 600 metres, and Bishnu beats Chintu by 700 metres. How far will Arjun beat Chintu by in a 3000-metre race?Solution
ATQ, Since, 'Arjun' beats 'Bishnu' by 600 metres in a 1500 metre race Therefore, distance covered by 'Bishnu' when 'Arjun' covers 1500 metres = 1500 - 600 = 900 metres Similarly, when 'Bishnu' covers 1500 metres, 'Chintu' covers = 1500 - 700 = 800 metres Therefore, distance covered by 'Chintu' when 'Bishnu' covers 900 metres = 800 X (900/1500) = 480 metres Now, when 'Arjun' covers 1500 metres, 'Chintu' covers 480 metres When 'Arjun' will cover 3000 metres i.e. (1500 X 2) , 'Chintu' will cover 480 X 2 = 960 metres Required distance by which 'Arjun' will beat 'Chintu' in a 3000 metres race = 3000 - 960 = 2040 metres
