      Question

      (i) 2x² + 14x - 16 = 0 (ii) y² – y – 12 =

      0 In each of these questions, two equations (i) and (ii) are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answers:
      A if x > y Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
      B if x ≥ y Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
      C if x = y or no relation can be established between x and y. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
      D if y > x Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
      E if y ≥ x Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

      Solution

      (i) 2x² + 14x - 16 = 0 =>2x² + 16x -2x - 16 = 0 =>2x (x +8) -2 (x +8) = 0 => (2x -2) (x + 8) = 0 =>x = –8, 1 (ii) y² – y – 12 = 0 => y² – 4y + 3y – 12 = 0 => y(y – 4) + 3(y – 4) = 0 => (y + 3) ( y – 4) = 0 => y = – 3, 4 No relation can be established between x and y.
