    Question

Pipe ‘A’ takes 24 hours to fill a tank. Pipe ‘B’

takes 72 hours to empty the same tank. If both are opened together, how long will it take to fill 66.67% of the tank?
A 25 hours Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 40 hours Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 38 hours Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 24 hours Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    Let the capacity of the tank be 216 litres. So, efficiency of pipe ‘A’ = 216 ÷ A = 9 litres/hour And efficiency of pipe ‘B’ = 216 ÷ B = 3 litres/hour So, combined efficiency of both pipes = 9 – 3 = 6 litres/hour So, time taken to fill 66% of the tank = (216 × 0.67) ÷ 6 = 144 ÷ 6 = 24 hours
