Karan spent 20% and 15% of his monthly salary on food and bills respectively. Out of the remaining amount, he spent 20% and 30% on entertainment and books, respectively. Now he gave 50% of the remaining amount to his sister and left with Rs. 8,125. Find the amount spent by Karan on books.

Let the monthly salary of Karan = Rs. 100x Amount spent by Karan on food and bills together = 20x + 15x = Rs. 35x Amount spent by Karan on entertainment and books together = 0.50 × (100x – 35x) = Rs. 32.5x Amount given to sister = 0.50 × (100x – 35x – 32.5x) = Rs. 16.25x So amount left with him = 0.50 × (100x – 35x – 32.5x) = 8125 16.25x = 8125 x = 500 So the amount spent by Karan on books = 0.30 × 65 × 500 = Rs. 9,750
