Let the total number of valid votes cast = 100x
Votes secured by winner = 100x × 0.60 = 60x
Votes secured by loser = 100x - 60x = 40x
Given,
60x - 40x = 800
Or, x = 800 ÷ 20 = 40
So, votes received by the losing candidate = 40 × 40 = 1600
