Question
A vessel contains mixture of honey and water mixed in
the ratio 5:3, respectively. 144 litres mixture is taken out of the vessel and is replaced with 58 litres of water, such that the percentage of honey in the resultant mixture becomes 48%. Determine the initial quantity of water in the vessel.Solution
ATQ, Let the initial quantities of honey and water in the vessel be 5x litres and 3x litres, respectively. 144 litres mixture contains 90 litres honey and 54 litres water. According to question: 0.48 × (8x – 144 + 58) = 5x – 90 3.84x – 41.28 = 5x – 90 1.16x = 48.72 x = 42 So, the initial quantity of water in the vessel = 3 × 42 = 126 litres
