      Solution

      Let the initial quantities of milk and water in the vessel be 9x litres and 5x litres respectively.
      56 litres mixture contains 36 litres milk and 20 litres water.
      According to question:
      9x – 36 = 5x – 20 + 40
      4x = 56
      x = 14
      So the initial quantity of mixture = 14 × 14 = 196 litres
