Question
A man can row at 36 km/hr in still water. In a stream which is flowing at 12 km/hr, it takes him 3 hrs to a place and back. How far is the place?
Solution
Let distance= x km, Rate upstream = 36 - 12 = 24 km/hr Rate downstream = 36 + 12 = 48 km/hr. ∴ Time taken upstream= x/24 and Time taken downstream= x/48 ∴ x/24 + x/48 = 3 ⇒ 3x/( 48) = 3 ⇒ x = 48 km.
