Question
The ratio of age of βAβ 6 years ago to the age of βBβ 4 years hence from now is 2 : 3. If the sum of their present ages is 48 years, then find the age of βBβ 2 years ago from now.
Solution
Let the present ages of βAβ and βBβ be βpβ years and βqβ years respectively. Then,
p + q = 48 Or,
q = 48 β p ATQ, [{(p - 6)}/{(q + 4)} = {2/3}] Or,
3(p β 6) = 2(q + 4) Or,
3p β 18 = 2q + 8 Or,
3p β 2q = 26 Or,
3p β 2(48 β p) = 26 Or,
3p β 96 + 2p = 26 Or,
5p = 122 Or,
p = 24 Or,
q = 48 β 24 = 24 Therefore, age of βBβ 2 years ago from now = 24 β 2 = 22 years
