Question
The current ages of 'A' and 'B' are 'p' years and 'q'
years respectively. Five years ago, their total age was 40 years. If the average of 'p' and 31 exceeds the average of 'q' and 31 by 4 years, then find the age of 'A' after 3 years.Solution
ATQ,
Five years ago: → (p - 5) + (q - 5) = 40 → p + q = 40 + 10 = 50 -------- (i) Given: → (p + 31)/2 = (q + 31)/2 + 4 → p + 31 = q + 31 + 8 → p = q + 8 Substituting in equation (i): → q + 8 + q = 50 → 2q = 42 → q = 21 → p = 21 + 8 = 29 Therefore, A’s age after 3 years = 29 + 3 = 32 years
