Question
6 years ago, the aunt was 3 times as old as her niece. In 5
years, the niece’s age will be 40% of the aunt’s age. What is the niece’s present age?Solution
ATQ,
6 years ago, let niece’s age be 'y' and aunt’s age = 3y
5 years later, aunt = 3y + 6 + 5 = (3y + 11)
Niece = y + 6 + 5 = (y + 11)
Given,
y + 11 = 0.4 × (3y + 11)
Or, y + 11 = 1.2y + 4.4
Solving,
y - 1.2y = 4.4 - 11
-0.2y = -6.6
y = 33
Present age = 33 + 6 = 39 years
