Section 14(1)(c) of the Specific Relief Act provides that specific performance shall not be granted where the terms of the contract are not sufficiently certain to form the basis of a decree. A court cannot compel performance of an agreement the content of which cannot be determined with reasonable precision. This certainty requirement protects both parties from a vague or ambiguous bargain. It complements the other bars - personal-service contracts, contracts needing continued supervision, and those where damages give adequate relief. Certainty is thus a threshold for the discretionary equitable remedy.
