The Government of India launched a CBDC-based Digital Food Currency pilot in the state of Gujarat under the Public Distribution System. The initiative was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah with support from the Reserve Bank of India and the Government of Gujarat. The pilot aims to introduce the Digital Rupee (e₹) into the food subsidy delivery mechanism. The initial rollout covered four districts in Gujarat—Ahmedabad, Anand, Valsad, and Surat. Beneficiaries receive programmable digital coupons credited directly to them, enabling the purchase of entitled food grains from Fair Price Shops using digital payment methods.
