    In C4 plants , CO₂  fixation at low concentrations is carried out by the enzyme PEP carboxylase (PEPcase) . This enzyme has a high affinity for CO₂ , allowing the plant to fix CO2 efficiently even when it is present in low amounts. This is the first step in the C4 photosynthetic pathway.
