Question
The position of how many people will remain unchanged if
they are seated alphabetically in clockwise direction starting from E? Study the following information carefully and answer the given Questions: Eight people viz., A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H speaking eight different languages viz., Hindi, English, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali, Urdu, Sanskrit and Assamese, not necessarily in the same order, gathered for a conference in a hall. All of them are seated around a circular table and are facing the centre. (i) The person who speaks Bengali sits third to the right of A. (ii) Either E is third to the right of G or G is third to the right of E. Neither E nor G is an immediate neighbour of A. Neither E nor G speaks Bengali. (iii) The person who speaks Urdu sits second to the right of D. D is not an immediate neighbour of A. D does not speak Bengali and A does not speak Urdu. (iv) The person who speaks Marathi sits third to the left of F and the people who speak Marathi and Bengali are not immediate neighbours. (v) Only one person sits between D and the person who speaks Assamese. People who speak Hindi and Tamil are immediate neighbours. D does not speak Tamil. (vi) Only one person sits between B and the person who speaks Sanskrit. The person who speaks Sanskrit is an immediate neighbour of H. G and B are not immediate neighbours.Solution
From (i), if A sits at place no 1, the person who speaks Bengali will sit at place no. 4. From (ii), since, neither E nor G is an immediate neighbour of A, it is clear that E and G cannot sit at place no. 2 and 8. Also neither of them speaks Bengali, so they cannot sit at place no. 4. At place no. 1, A is already there. If anyone of E and G sits at 7, the other has to sit at either 2 or 4, which is not possible. Similarly, neither of them can sit at place no. 5. Hence, only two places 3 and 6 are left for E and G. Hence, they will sit at 3 or 6.
From (iii), D cannot sit at place nos. 2, 8 and 4 as D is not an immediate neighbour of A and does not speak Bengali. So, only place left for D is either 5 or 7. But, D cannot be at place no. 7 because then the person speaking Urdu will be at 1 which is not possible, because A is at place 1 and he does not speak Urdu. Hence, D will be at place no. 5 and the person speaking Urdu will be at place no. 7.
From (iv), the person who speaks Marathi cannot sit at place nos. 3 and 5 as he is not an immediate neighbour of the person who speaks Bengali. He cannot sit at place nos. 2 and 8 because these positions are third to the left of D and E/G respectively. He cannot sit at place nos. 4 and 7 as already people speaking Bengali and Urdu respectively are sitting there. He cannot sit at place no. 6 also as either E or G is already sitting at 3. So, only place left for the person who speaks Marathi is place no. 1. We can see that A is there at place no. 1. This means, A speaks Marathi. And then F will sit at place no. 4. Hence, F speaks Bengali.
From (v), it is clear that the person who speaks Assamese is at place no. 3. Since people who speak Hindi and Tamil are immediate neighbours, they will be at place nos. 5 and 6 which are only consecutive places left. Again, D does not speak Tamil, hence , it is clear that D speaks Hindi and he is at place no. 5 and person who speaks Tamil is at place no. 6.
Now, only place nos. 2 and 8 are left for B and the person who speaks Sanskrit. From (vi), since, the person who speaks Sanskrit is an immediate neighbour of H, he will be at place no. 8 and H will be at place no. 7. B will be at place no. 2. Since, G and B are not immediate neighbours, G cannot be at place no. 3, hence, G will be at 6 and E will be at 3. Now only one place i.e no. 2 is left for the person who speaks English, hence, he will sit at place no. 2. Now, only one person C is left for place no.8, hence, C will be at place no. 8.
