Question
In a test, Riya got 40% of the total marks and was short by
16 marks to pass. Meena obtained 50% marks and secured 4 marks more than the passing marks. What were the passing marks of the test?Solution
ATQ,
Let the total marks of the test be 100x
Marks scored by Riya = 0.40 Ă— 100x = 40x
Passing marks = 40x + 16
Marks scored by Meena = 0.50 Ă— 100x = 50x
Passing marks = 50x - 4
So,
40x + 16 = 50x - 4
⇒ 10x = 20
⇒ x = 2
Therefore, passing marks = 40x + 16 = 40 Ă— 2 + 16 = 96
