Question
The question given below consists of three statements
numbered I, II and III given below. You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Read all the statements and give answer. Seven people F, G, H, I, J, K and L are seated in a linear row facing north. F and G are immediate neighbors. Who sits third to the left of I? Statement I: L sits at one of the extreme ends. Two persons sit between G and L. H sits second to the left of F. Statement II: One person sits between G and K. Not more than two persons sit between I and K. I and J are immediate neighbors. Statement III: Four persons sit between L and K. G sits second to the right of K. Only one person sits to the left or right of J.Solution
From statement I, L sits at one of the extreme ends. Two persons sit between G and L. H sits second to the left of F. So, from statement I, L either sits at the extreme left or right end so, we can’t fix either L or G. From statement II, one person sits between G and K. Not more than two persons sit between I and K. I and J are immediate neighbors. From statement II, also, K either sits to the left or right of G which means we can’t fix I. From statement I and II: From statement I and II we have three cases i.e., Case I: L         K        H        G        F         I          J Case II: ____  J         I          G        F         K        L Case III: H        K        F         G        I          J         L So, case I and II are invalid. From case III, K sits 3rd to the left of I. So, statement I and II together are sufficient to answer the question. From statement I and III: L sits at one of the extreme ends. Two persons sit between G and L. H sits second to the left of F. Four persons sit between L and K. G sits second to the right of K. Only one person sits between either to the left or right of J. So, we have 2 cases i.e., Case I: I          K        H        G        F         J         L Case II: H        K        F         G        I          J         L So, from statement I and III together are not sufficient to answer the question. From statement II and III: One person sits between G and K. Not more than two persons sit between I and K. I and J are immediate neighbors. Four persons sit between L and K. G sits second to the right of K. Only one person sits between either to the left or right of J. Case I: H        K        F         G        I          J         L Case II: K        J         G        F         ____  L         _____ So, case II is invalid. From case I, K sits second to right of I. So, the statement in II and III together are sufficient to answer the question.
