Question
A man cycles to the market at a speed of 12 km/h and returns at 16 km/h. If the total time taken for the entire journey is 1 hour and 5 minutes, what is the distance between his house and the market?
Solution
Let the distance between his house and the market be βdβ km.
ATQ,
(d/12) + (d/16) = (65/60)
Or, (4d/48) + (3d/48) = (13/12)
Or, (7d/48) = (13/12)
So, d = (13 Γ 48) / (7 Γ 12) = 624 / 84 = 7.43
So, the distance between his house and the market = d = 7.43 km
