A 160 m long train overtakes another 140 m long train in 12 sec. If the speed of the slower train is 54 kmph, what is the speed of the faster train?

Let the speed of the faster train = x kmph ∴ Relative speed of the trains = (x - 54) kmph ⇒ (x - 54)× (5/18) m/sec. Distance = 160 + 140 = 300 m and time = 12 sec ∴ (x - 54)(5/18) = 300/12 ⇒ x- 54 = (300× 18)/(5× 12) = 90 ∴ x = 90 + 54 = 144 kmph.
