Question
The school has two types of classes: Math and Science.
The average number of students per Math class is x, and the average number of students per Science class is y. The school has 5 Math classes and 4 Science classes. If the total number of students in all Math classes is 160 more than the total number of students in all Science classes, and the average number of students per class across all classes is 40, how many students are there in each Math and Science class?Solution
Total number of students in math class = 5x Total number of students in science class = 4y According to question- 5x = 4y+160 5x-4y = 160   ….(1) And also, 5x+4y = 9 × 40 5x+4y = 360   ….(2) Adding both these equations we get- 10x = 520 x = 52, putting this value in above equation y = 25 total number of students in math class = 5x =260 total students in science class = 4y = 100
