    Question

During a school council election, candidate X received

61% of the votes and beat candidate Y by a margin of 4,880 votes. Determine how many votes candidate Y received.
A 8,658 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 7.016 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 6,116 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 9,558 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    ATQ,
    Let total votes = 100n

    Votes for X = 61n

    Votes for Y = 100n - 61n = 39n

    61n - 39n = 4,880

    ⇒ 22n = 4,880

    ⇒ n = 222

    Votes received by Y = 39 × 222 = 8,658
