      Question

Find the maximum value of (a + b) if '2a741b6' is

      divisible by 12.
A 16 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 15 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 17 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 18 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

      Solution

      A number is divisible by 12 if it divisible by both 3 and 4. A number is divisible by 4 when last two digits of the number is divisible by 4. 'b6' is divisible by 4 when 'b' = 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9. Since, we have to find maximum value, so 'b' = 9. A number is divisible by 3 when sum of its digit is divisible by 3. So, (2 + a + 7 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 6) = (29 + a) must be divisible by 3. So, 'a' = 1, 4 or 7. Since, we have to find maximum value, so 'a' = 7. Therefore, required value = 7 + 9 = 16
