The ratio of milk and water in a mixture is 4:3
respectively. When 8 litres of milk and 10 litres of water are added to the mixture, the ratio becomes 6:5 respectively. Find the initial quantity of the mixture.Solution
Let the initial quantity of milk and water be '4y' and '3y' litres respectively.
So, (4y + 8):(3y + 10) = 6:5
Or, 5 × (4y + 8) = 6 × (3y + 10)
Or, 20y + 40 = 18y + 60
Or, 2y = 20
Or, y = 10
Therefore, required quantity = 4y + 3y = 7y = 7 × 10 = 70 litres
