Question
The speed of a boat in still water is 10 km/h , and the speed of the stream is 2 km/h . How much time (in hours) will it take to travel 48 km downstream  and then 40 km upstream ?
Solution
Downstream speed = 10 + 2 = 12 km/h Upstream speed = 10 − 2 = 8 km/h Time downstream = 48 / 12 = 4 hours Time upstream = 40 / 8 = 5 hours Total time = 4 + 5 = 9 hours
