Question
The right to equality under Article 14 is subject to
what exception?Solution
Article 14 permits the State to make reasonable classifications, provided the classification has a rational basis and is not arbitrary. The test for reasonable classification, established in AIR v. Rajasthan (1963) 1 SCR 191, requires: (1) intelligible differentia, (2) rational relation to the object sought. This allows for differential treatment based on legitimate grounds.
