Under Section 83 of the Right to Information Act, subject to certain specified exemptions, information relating to any occurrence, event or matter which took place twenty years before the date of the request shall be provided to any person making a request. This twenty-year rule generally lifts certain exemptions for older information. However, exemptions relating to matters such as sovereignty and integrity, parliamentary privilege, and cabinet papers in some respects continue to apply even after this period.
