The Government of India launched 'Sahkar' as an app-based taxi service operating under a cooperative framework. Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah announced this initiative during discussions on the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2023. Unlike traditional ride-hailing services, Sahkar empowers drivers as stakeholders rather than mere service providers. The service will register two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, and four-wheeler cabs across India. Built on the principle of "Sahakar se Samriddhi" (Prosperity through Cooperation), the maximum profit earned will be distributed equitably among the taxi drivers who are members of the cooperative society.
