    Under a project by National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal to work on cloning of indigenous cow breeds such as Gir and Sahiwal, India's first cloned Gir female calf named 'Ganga' weighing 32 kg. The world's first buffalo calf through the “Hand Guided Cloning Technique” was born on February, 6, 2009 at NDRI, Karnal which died within 7 days after its birth. Subsequently, the second cloned calf “GARIMA” was born on 6th June, 2009 with the birth weight of 43 kg.
