Question
Who among the following got highest
marks? Study the following information carefully and answer the given questions. Eight persons Ashok, Basant, Charan, Deepu, Gopal, Harish, Jaiveer and Kishan appeared in an examination and scored some marks (out of 100) 10, 24, 26, 36, 40, 50, 90 and 100 not necessarily in the same order. Marks of Gopal were more than Kishan. Marks of Ashok and Basant together were equal to Harish. Charan got less marks than Deepu. Marks of Charan and Deepu together were equal to the marks of Basant. Not more than 3 persons got less marks than Deepu. Marks of Basant, Charan and Deepu together were equal to Jaiveer.Solution
Not more than 3 persons got less marks than Deepu. Here, there are there possible scenarios in which we can use the above information accordingly. No one got less marks than Deepu.
Charan got less marks than Deepu. Marks of Charan and Deepu together were equal to the marks of Basant. Using the above information we can say that our Case 1 fails because in case 1 it is clear that no one got less marks than Deepu which is contradicting with the given hints so we can say that this is an invalid case. In our case 2 we can fix the position of Charan and can confirm that Charan got 10 marks. But when we move on to the next hint we will see that the total marks of Charan and Deepu is 34 and after this we cannot place Basant in the table under these conditions because no one got 34 marks in the exam. So, we can say that Case 2 fails . In our case 3 the possible marks for Charan are 24 and 10. If Charan got 24 marks then the total score of Charan and Deepu is 50. After that we can say that Basant got 50 marks.
Similarly, in case 4 the possible marks of Charan are 26, 24 and 10. If Charan got 26 marks then the total score of Charan and Deepu is 62. After that we can say that Basant got 62 marks which is not possible under the given conditions as no one got 62 marks. If Charan got 24 marks then the total score of Charan and Deepu is 60. After that we can say that Basant got 60 marks which is also not possible under the given conditions as no one got 60 marks. If Charan got 10 marks then the total score of Charan and Deepu is 46. After that we can say that Basant got 46 marks which is again not possible under the given conditions as no one got 46 marks. So, we can say that Case 4 fails. Marks of Basant, Charan and Deepu together were equal to Jaiveer. Using the given hint in Case 3 we can say that Jaiveer got 100 marks and 72 marks in case 3-A. Here, 72 marks is not possible for Deepu as no one got 72 marks. So, we can say that Case 3-A fails .
Marks of Gopal were more than Kishan : We can use the above information easily and figure out the marks of all of them.
