Question

    Train ‘X’ takes 54 seconds to pass a tree and 48

    seconds to completely cross train ‘Y’ when they are moving in opposite directions. If the speed of train ‘X’ is 36 km/h and the speed of train ‘Y’ is 54 km/h, what is the length of train ‘Y’?
    A 237 m Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    B 723 m Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    C 938 m Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    D 660 m Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    E None of these Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    ATQ,

    Speed of train ‘X’ = 36 km/hr = 36 × (5/18) = 10 m/s

    Speed of train ‘Y’ = 54 km/hr = 54 × (5/18) = 15 m/s

    Length of train ‘X’ = 10 × 54 = 540 metres

    Let the length of train ‘Y’ be ‘m’ metres.

    According to the question;

    (540 + m)/(10 + 15) = 48

    Or, 540 + m = 1200

    Or, m = 660 metres

    So, the length of train ‘Y’ = 660 metres
