Question
The speed of a boat is 40% more than that of a steamer.
If the time taken by the boat to cover (2x + 40) km is equal to the time taken by the steamer to cover (x + 50) km. If the speed of a jet is 120 km/hr, then find the time taken by it to cover (4x + 40) km.Solution
Let the speed of steamer be 'a' km/hr Therefore, speed of boat = '1.4a' km/hr According to the question, {(2x + 40)/1.4a} = {(x + 50)/a} Or, 2x + 40 = 1.4x + 70 Or, 0.6x = 30 Or, 'x' = (30/0.6) = 50 Therefore, (4x + 40) = 200 + 40 = 240 Required time taken = (240/120) = 2 hours
