Question
While traveling from town ‘M’ to town ‘N’, a traveller covers (1/6)th of the total distance in 1 hour and the remaining in 5 hours. If he returns to town ‘M’ from town ‘N’ in 9 hours, find his average speed for the whole journey, given that the distance between towns ‘M’ and ‘N’ is 72 km.
Solution
ATQ,
Average speed = total distance covered ÷ total time taken
Total time taken = 1 + 5 + 9 = 15 hours
Total distance covered = 72 × 2 = 144 km.
Required average speed = 144/15 = 9.6 km/h
