I. x2 + 11x + 30 = 0

II. y2 + 17y + 72 = 0

Solution

I. x2 + 11x + 30 = 0 => x2 + 6x + 5x + 30 = 0 => x(x + 6) + 5(x + 6) = 0 => (x + 6) (x + 5) = 0 => x = -6, -5 II. y2 + 17y + 72 = 0 => y2 + 9y + 8y + 72 = 0 => y(y + 9) + 8(y + 9) = 0 => (y + 9) (y + 8) = 0 => y = -9, -8 Hence, x > y.
