Question
A boat can row 18 km downstream in 3 hours and 12 km
upstream in 4 hours. Calculate the speed of the boat in still water and the speed of the stream, respectively.Solution
Downstream speed = Distance / Time = 18 / 3 = 6 km/h
Upstream speed = Distance / Time = 12 / 4 = 3 km/h
Let, Boat speed in still water = B
Stream speed = S
Downstream speed = B + S
Upstream speed = B − S
So, B + S = 6
B − S = 3
Add both equations:
2B = 9
B = 4.5 km/h
Substitute in first equation:
4.5 + S = 6
S = 1.5 km/h
Boat speed in still water = 4.5 km/h
Speed of stream = 1.5 km/h
