Question
Pipe βAβ fills a tank in 16 hours. Pipe βBβ
empties the same in 32 hours. If both are opened together, how much time will it take to fill 50% of the tank?Solution
Let the capacity of the tank be 96 litres.
So, efficiency of pipe βAβ = 96 Γ· A = 6 litres/hour And efficiency of pipe βBβ = 96 Γ· B = 3 litres/hour So, combined efficiency of both pipes = 6 β 3 = 3 litres/hour So, time taken to fill 50% of the tank = (96 Γ 0.50) Γ· 3 = 48 Γ· 3 = 16 hours
