Question
Pipe ‘A’ fills a tank in 16 hours. Pipe ‘B’
empties the same in 32 hours. If both are opened together, how much time will it take to fill 50% of the tank?Solution
Let the capacity of the tank be 96 litres.
So, efficiency of pipe ‘A’ = 96 ÷ A = 6 litres/hour And efficiency of pipe ‘B’ = 96 ÷ B = 3 litres/hour So, combined efficiency of both pipes = 6 – 3 = 3 litres/hour So, time taken to fill 50% of the tank = (96 × 0.50) ÷ 3 = 48 ÷ 3 = 16 hours
