      Question

Pipe 'A' is twice as efficient as pipe 'B'. Pipe 'C', which

is one-third as efficient as pipe 'B', can fill a tank alone in 27 hours. Find difference between time taken by pipe 'C' to fill 33.33% of the tank and time taken (in minutes) by pipe 'A' to fill the tank completely.
A 270 minutes Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 330 minutes Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 300 minutes Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 240 minutes Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

      Solution

Let the efficiency of pipe 'C' be 'x' litres/hour.
So, total capacity of the tank = '27x' litres.

      Efficiency of pipe 'A' = x × 3 × 2 = '6x' litres/hour
      So, time taken by pipe 'A' to fill the tank = 27x / 6x = 4.5 hours

      And, time taken by pipe 'C' to fill 33.33% of the tank = (27x × 1/3) / x = 9 hours

      So, required difference = 9 - 4.5 = 4.5 hours = 4.5 × 60 = 270 minutes
