Question
An inlet pipe can fill an empty tank in 18 minutes whereas an outlet pipe can empty the fully filled tank in 27 minutes. Find the time taken by both the pipes together to fill half of the empty tank.
Solution
Let the total capacity of tank be 54 litres (LCM of 18 and 27)
Efficiency of inlet pipe = (54/18) = 3 litres/minute
Efficiency of outlet pipe = (54/27) = -2 litres/minute
Required time = (0.5 Γ 54) Γ· (3 - 2) = 27 minutes
