The population of a town increased by 20%, while the

female population decreased by 10%. If the initial ratio of males to females population was 3:2, then find the percentage change in the male population.
A 40% Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 50% Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 30% Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 60% Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

      Solution

Let initial male population and initial female population be 3x and 2x respectively

      Total initial population = 3x + 2x = 5x

      After 20% increase, total population = 5x × 1.2 = 6x

      Decreased female population = 2x × 0.9 = 1.8x

      So, increased male population = 6x − 1.8x = 4.2x

      Percentage change in male population = {(4.2x − 3x) / 3x} × 100

      = (1.2x / 3x) × 100

      = 40%
