Question
Mehul allocates his income in the following manner: 25%
is spent on rent. After rent, he uses 20% of the balance on groceries. He spends one-fifth of the remaining amount on travel. Following these expenses, he spends 25% of what's left on entertainment. He saves the remaining sum, which amounts to Rs. 45,000. Calculate his total income.Solution
Let the income of Mehul be Rs. '100q'.
Money spent on rent = 0.25 × 100q = Rs. '25q'
Remaining income = 100q – 25q = Rs. '75q' Money spent on groceries = 0.20 × 75q = Rs. '15q'
Remaining income = 75q – 15q = Rs. '60q' Money spent on travel = (1/5) × 60q = Rs. '12q'
Remaining income = 60q – 12q = Rs. '48q' Money spent on entertainment = 0.25 × 48q = Rs. '12q'
Savings = 48q – 12q = Rs. '36q' So, 36q = 45,000
Or, q = 1,250
Therefore, income of Mehul = 1,250 × 100 = Rs. 1,25,000
