Question
In an exam, Riya scored 40% and fell short of the pass
mark by 20 marks, whereas Mehul scored 50% and exceeded the passing mark by 10 marks. What are the passing marks?Solution
ATQ,
Let the maximum marks of the exam be 100x
Marks scored by Riya = 0.40 Γ 100x = 40x
So, passing marks = 40x + 20
Marks scored by Mehul = 0.50 Γ 100x = 50x
So, passing marks = 50x - 10
Therefore, 40x + 20 = 50x - 10
β 10x = 30
β x = 3
Passing marks = 40x + 20 = 40 Γ 3 + 20 = 120 + 20 = 140
