Question
In an entrance test, Sneha scored 41% and was 17 marks below the passing level, while Rohan scored 49% and obtained 7 marks more than the passing marks. Determine the passing marks.
Solution
ATQ,
Let the maximum marks of the exam be 100x
Sneha’s marks = 0.41 × 100x = 41x
Passing marks = 41x + 17
Rohan’s marks = 0.49 × 100x = 49x
Passing marks = 49x - 7
So, 41x + 17 = 49x - 7
⇒ 8x = 24
⇒ x = 3
Passing marks = 41x + 17 = 41 × 3 + 17 = 123 + 17 = 140
