Question
A mixture (milk + water) contains milk and water in the
ratio of 5:3, respectively. If 64 litres of the mixture is replaced with 32 litres of water, then quantity of milk in the final mixture becomes 24 litres more than that of water. Find the initial quantity of the mixture.Solution
Let the quantity of milk and water in the initial mixture be β5xβ litres and β3xβ litres, respectively Quantity of milk in 64 litres of the mixture
= 64 Γ (5/8) = 40 litres Quantity of water in 64 litres of the mixture
= 64 β 40 = 24 litres According to the question, (5x β 40) = (3x β 24 + 32) + 24 Or, 5x β 3x = 40 + 32 Or, 2x = 72 Or, x = 36 Initial quantity of the mixture
= 8x = 8 Γ 36 = 288 litres
