Question
A mixture contains milk and water in the ratio of 8:5,
respectively. If 260 ml of mixture is taken out and 80 ml of milk and 100 ml of water is added into the remaining mixture, then the ratio of milk to water in the resultant mixture becomes 7:5. Find the quantity of milk in the mixture initially.Solution
Let quantity of milk and water in the initial mixture is ‘8x’ ml and ‘5x’ ml respectively.
Quantity of milk in 260 ml of mixture = (8/13) × 260 = 160 ml
Quantity of water in 260 ml of mixture = 260 – 160 = 100 ml
According to question;
(8x – 160 + 80)/(5x – 100 + 100) = 7/5
Or, (8x – 80)/(5x) = 7/5
Or, 40x – 400 = 35x
Or, 5x = 400
Or, x = 80
Quantity of milk in initial mixture = 8 × 80 = 640 ml
