Question
A mixture contains milk and water in the ratio of 9:5,
respectively. If 224 ml of mixture is taken out and 72 ml of milk and 104 ml of water is added into the remaining mixture, then the ratio of milk to water in the resultant mixture becomes 3:2. Find the quantity of milk in the mixture initially.Solution
Let quantity of milk and water in the initial mixture is ‘9x’ ml and ‘5x’ ml respectively.
Quantity of milk in 224 ml of mixture = (9/14) × 224 = 144 ml
Quantity of water in 224 ml of mixture = 224 – 144 = 80 ml
According to question;
(9x – 144 + 72)/(5x – 80 + 104) = 3/2
Or, (9x – 72)/(5x + 24) = 3/2
Or, 18x – 144 = 15x + 72
Or, 3x = 216
Or, x = 72
Quantity of milk in initial mixture = 9 × 72 = 648 ml
