Question
A container has a mixture of alcohol and water in the ratio
4:3. After removing 84 ml of the mixture and adding 168 ml of water, the quantity of water becomes 100% more than that of alcohol. Find the original quantity of the mixture.Solution
ATQ,
Let the amount of alcohol and water in the original mixture be 4x ml and 3x ml respectively.
Amount of alcohol in 84 ml of mixture = 4/7 × 84 = 48 ml
Amount of water in 84 ml of mixture = 84 – 48 = 36 ml
According to the question:
(3x – 36 + 168) = 2 × (4x – 48)
Or, 3x + 132 = 8x – 96
Or, 5x = 228
Or, x = 45.6
Original quantity of mixture = 7x = 7 × 45.6 = 319.2 ml
