Question

A boat can travel 180 km downstream in 4 hours. If the ratio of the speed of the boat in still water to the speed of the stream is 5:1, then find the time taken by the boat to travel 150 km upstream.

A 4 hours 30 minutes Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 5 hours 15minutes Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 5 hours Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 4 hours 15 minutes Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

Solution

Downstream speed of the boat = 180 ÷ 4 = 45 km/h Let speed of boat in still water = 5x km/h, and speed of stream = x km/h Then, downstream speed of the boat = 5x + x = 6x 6x = 45 x = 7.5 So, speed of boat in still water = 5 × 7.5 = 37.5 km/h So, upstream speed of the boat = 37.5 - 7.5 = 30 km/h Therefore, required time = 150 ÷ 30 = 5 hours
