The downstream speed of a boat is 16 kmph more than its upstream speed and the sum of the downstream and upstream speeds is 44 kmph. The boat covers (x + 10) km in the direction of stream in 4 hours. Find the value of
x.

ATQ, Stream speed = (downstream – upstream)/2 = 16/2 = 8 km/hr Boat speed in still water = (downstream + upstream)/2 = 44/2 = 22 km/hr Downstream speed = 22 + 8 = 30 km/hr Distance covered downstream in 4 hours = (x + 10) (x + 10)/4 = 30 x + 10 = 120 x = 120 – 10 = 110 km
